Born on June 16, 1893, into the affluent Karumuttu family, Thiagarajan was the youngest son of Muthukaruppan Chettiar through his second wife. Thiagarajan started Sree Meenakshi Mills, which became the largest mill run by an Indian in south India in 1940. He started educational institutions and spent over ₹60 million on them
